SUMMARY:SNCA May Meeting
DESCRIPTION:WHO: Short North Civic Association\nWHAT: Monthly Meeting\nWHERE: Columbus Metropolitan Library\,\n1423 N. High St.\, Columbus\, Ohio 43201\nWHEN: Thursday\, May 4 – 2023 @ 6:30pm \nView via Zoom »\nMeeting ID: 618 455 3150 \nVIEW MEETING AGENDA » \nAgenda includes final SNCA Membership Committee plan and Maria Cantrell\, Vision Zero Coordinator who will address traffic safety – more info about Maria Cantrell’s presentation below: \nVision Zero’s Maria Cantrell to Discuss Traffic Safety at May 4th SNCA Meeting. \nVision Zero’s Columbus coordinator\, Maria Cantrell\, P.E.\, has kindly agreed to address the SNCA at its public meeting at 6:30 pm on Thursday\, May 4\, 2023\, at the Northside Branch of the Columbus Public Library. The SNCA views this as an opportunity to reopen its dialogue with the City of Columbus regarding how traffic safety\, broadly viewed\, can be improved in our neighborhoods. \nIn 2021\, the City of Columbus joined several of its sister cities in the “Vision Zero” initiative\, which “commits to protecting lives above all other objectives of our city transportation system.” “Vision Zero fundamentally changes the approach to traffic safety by looking holistically at our transportation system – using input from our local government agencies\, institutions\, and residents to prioritize safety for all users — motorists\, bicyclists\, pedestrians\, and transit riders.” \nMost recently as a Vision Zero initiative\, Columbus City Council has reduced all downtown speed limits to 25 mph\, in an effort to make that area safer and more inviting for pedestrians\, cyclists and others. \nIn the Short North\, population growth along the High Street corridor\, in and near Italian Village\, and nearby in Grandview Yard\, has placed increasing stress on our Nineteenth Century street grid. Traffic speeds along Neil Avenue appear to have increased markedly in the late nighttime hours\, after the installation of the more modern\, camera-activated signal system along that street. Many residents have remained dissatisfied after the City’s decision to raise posted speed limits along several “through streets” from 25 mph to 30 mph in 2013. While High Street itself has benefitted from many traffic calming improvements that make that corridor more pedestrian\, bicycle and transit-friendly\, the same cannot be said for other areas of the greater Short North. \nAmong salient issues we intend to raise are: \n\nReduction of posted speed limits on all area streets to 25 mph. Unlike most Columbus neighborhoods\, ours was laid out well before the age of the automobile\, its architecture and sight-lines are not comparable to more modern residential areas\, and it is more densely populated and heavily travelled than ever;\nTiming of traffic signals to reinforce speed limit compliance\, particularly late at night; and\nIncreased use of “traffic calming” features\, such as islands\, bump-outs\, etc.\n\nThose who are concerned about traffic safety in the greater Short North are invited to attend.

SUMMARY:Robert Mason Trio
DESCRIPTION:Goodale Park Music Series presents the Robert Mason Trio on Sunday July 24 at the Goodale Park gazebo. Bring your chair or blanket or both and enjoy a Sunday in the park with great music! \nRobert began playing piano at age nine\, starting his journey as the first in his family to play in instrument. He fell in love with music at an early age and began listening to a wide range of styles. Whether it was enjoying music during Sunday service at his baptist church growing up\, or listening to the his parents favorite r&b classics while on road trips\, Robert soaked in as many influences as possible. \nAlthough piano was his favorite instrument\, he wanted to find a way to share his love for music with others and perform in groups. Originally from Gahanna\, Ohio He picked up the violin and joined the school orchestra in fifth grade\, and also joined the middle school band on French horn the following year. Robert continued playing classical music through senior year. Robert was first exposed to jazz when he performed piano in the school jazz ensembles growing up. His jazz band director\, Kelly Shellhammer\, would let him take home her favorite cds\, where he listened to greats like Oscar Peterson and Herbie Hancock. Robert quickly fell in love with the style\, which sparked his curiosity. \nRobert’s interest grew as he found a style of music where he could improvise and play his favorite instrument in a group setting. To get a deeper understanding of the music\, Shellhammer introduced him to Columbus pianist\, Mark Flugge\, where Robert was able to further develop jazz theory and improvisation. \nRobert continued to further pursue his study in music at The Ohio State University where he got his Bachelor’s degree in Jazz studies in 2015. He also received several scholarships at OSU including: the Atkin Jazz Scholarship\, Tom Battenberg Jazz Scholarship\, and the George and Janice Scantland Jazz Scholarship. \nSince college\, Robert has been involved with various projects and actively performs in Columbus. His personal group\, the Robert Mason Trio recently released their debut album\, State of Soul\, featuring a blend of jazz and soulful sounds. Robert Currently performs with: Fo/Mo/Deep\, Soul Revival\, Renee Dion\, the Pocketbooks\, Kinfolk\, Blue Water Kings\, and many others. He also helps lead the worship band at Flintridge Community Church. \nRobert also teaches piano lessons at Musicologie\, a studio in Grandview. He is currently a teaching assistant at Jazz Arts Group\, where he helps lead combos and workshops for grade students. \nRobert has performed at venues and events such as: Creekside Blues & Jazz Festival\, Columbus Jazz and Ribs Festival\, the Lincoln Theatre (Columbus\, OH)\, Blu Jazz+ (Akron\, OH)\, The Refectory (Columbus)\, Natalies Music Hall & Kitchen (Columbus) \nAs an artist\, he has performed with musicians such as: James Gaiters\, Dwight Adams\, Bobby Floyd\, Kevin Turner\, Reggie Jackson\, Cedric Easton\, Milton Ruffin\, George Delancey\, Tony Mcclung\, Shawn Wallace\, Eddie Bayard\, Dwight Bailey\, Jim Rupp.\n(source: RMasonMusic.com

SUMMARY:The Spikedrivers
DESCRIPTION:Goodale Park Music Series presents The Spikedrivers on Sunday July 17 at the Goodale Park gazebo. Bring your chair or blanket or both and enjoy a Sunday in the park with great music! \nIn 2003 a new sound sprang up in the Rust Belt; a raucous\, down-and-dirty sound\, an intoxicating and gritty sound that pulled people in droves to dance floors across the Midwest. That new sound was the bluesy\, upbeat\, country-fried rock ‘n’ roll of The Spikdrivers. \nFront man Jesse Henry’s unique and down-home song writing meets the electrified ruckus and wild precision of the backing band simiilar to what might have been if Louis Prima had led The Band. \nThe band has four studio albums and three live records that brought their songs into the hearts and ears of listeners across the United States. The Spikedrivers can grab hold of an audience and turn them instantly to avid fans.\n(source: TheSpikeDrivers.com)
