DESCRIPTION:Help Friends of Goodale Park keep Columbus Ohio’s oldest (and BEST!) city park looking beautiful. 13+ gardens are 100% volunteer planted and maintained\, weeding\, watering\, litter pickup and more. We can’t do it without you! \nJoin us Saturday from 9am to noon in Goodale Park. Meet at the Caretaker’s Residence in the center of the park (use Park St driveway into the park and follow until it dead-ends). Please wear weather-appropriate clothing\, as we will be working outdoors. \nA weather update will be posted on Facebook (@Friends of Goodale Park) at 8am the morning of the event\, so please check before heading to the park. \nGot tools? Bring ’em! We have a supply of garden gloves and tools\, but we always need more. Hand trowels\, shovels\, and clippers (non-electric\, please) are always in demand. \n– If you are able\, please bring your own gloves\, tools\, and water to limit the sharing of items \nRegistration is not required \n\nThis volunteer opportunity will be replacing the Short North Civic Association’s July 4th meeting – we encourage SNCA members to volunteer!

DESCRIPTION:In 2003 a new sound sprang up in the Rust Belt; a raucous\, down-and-dirty sound\, an intoxicating and gritty sound that\npulled people in droves to dance floors across the Midwest. That new sound was the bluesy\, upbeat\, country-fried rock ‘n’ roll of The Spikdrivers.  Front man Jesse Henry’s unique and down-home song writing meets the electrified ruckus and wild precision of the backing band simiilar to what might have been if Louis Prima had led The Band. The SNCA views this as an opportunity to reopen its dialogue with the City of Columbus regarding how traffic safety\, broadly viewed\, can be improved in our neighborhoods. \nIn 2021\, the City of Columbus joined several of its sister cities in the “Vision Zero” initiative\, which “commits to protecting lives above all other objectives of our city transportation system.” “Vision Zero fundamentally changes the approach to traffic safety by looking holistically at our transportation system – using input from our local government agencies\, institutions\, and residents to prioritize safety for all users — motorists\, bicyclists\, pedestrians\, and transit riders.” \nMost recently as a Vision Zero initiative\, Columbus City Council has reduced all downtown speed limits to 25 mph\, in an effort to make that area safer and more inviting for pedestrians\, cyclists and others. \nIn the Short North\, population growth along the High Street corridor\, in and near Italian Village\, and nearby in Grandview Yard\, has placed increasing stress on our Nineteenth Century street grid. Traffic speeds along Neil Avenue appear to have increased markedly in the late nighttime hours\, after the installation of the more modern\, camera-activated signal system along that street. Many residents have remained dissatisfied after the City’s decision to raise posted speed limits along several “through streets” from 25 mph to 30 mph in 2013. While High Street itself has benefitted from many traffic calming improvements that make that corridor more pedestrian\, bicycle and transit-friendly\, the same cannot be said for other areas of the greater Short North. \nAmong salient issues we intend to raise are: \n\nReduction of posted speed limits on all area streets to 25 mph. Unlike most Columbus neighborhoods\, ours was laid out well before the age of the automobile\, its architecture and sight-lines are not comparable to more modern residential areas\, and it is more densely populated and heavily travelled than ever;\nTiming of traffic signals to reinforce speed limit compliance\, particularly late at night; and\nIncreased use of “traffic calming” features\, such as islands\, bump-outs\, etc.\n\nThose who are concerned about traffic safety in the greater Short North are invited to attend.
