SUMMARY:Willie Phoenix - Goodale Park Music Series
DESCRIPTION:Whether he’s playing haunting blues\, straight forward rock\, garage band noise or psychedelic fusion – Willie Phoenix delivers. Willie’s career has spanned decades – and so has his passion – never stopping\, never failing to deliver jaw-dropping performances with an undeniable edge. \nBorn in Camden Alabama\, Willie says he entered the world “wrapped in a burning southern flag” – referencing his love for the blues. Growing up\, he listened to all of the greats. They were all there on the 78/45 rpm records played on his family’s Magnavox record player: Muddy Waters\, Lightening Hopkins\, Howling Wolf\, John Lee Hooker and country greats Hank Williams\, Buck Owens and Jerry Reed. Willie remembers thinking the guitars\, harmonicas and voices possessed the same echoing\, lonely sound as the midnight trains that rumbled past his Marion\, Ohio home. It was there\, in Marion\, where he grew up\, went to school and cut his teeth on early British invasion blues and rock n’ roll. \nWillie has never looked back. He learned to play the blues from his father\, bluesman Willie James Creagh Sr. who played with big names like Muddy Waters and Sonny Boy Williamson II (Willie’s godfather). Willie says\, “I had a certain knack for writing songs. I started playing guitar\, grabbed a few of my mates\, formed a band and made a lot of wonderful noise.” Willie has worked clubs and concert halls from Toronto Canada straight to the west coast neon lights of Hollywood. He’s performed with many greats\, including Muddy Waters\, BB King\, rock n’ roll’s Ramones and The Talking Heads – to name only a few. \nA prolific songwriter\, Willie has released more albums than can be mentioned – most recently Save the Angels (2024) released through 1978 Records. \nThough he’s a very humble guy\, if you’re lucky you might get Willie to tell you about how the City of Columbus honored “the legendary rock god Willie Phoenix” by renaming 16th and High Street “Willie Phoenix Way” (October\, 2020) or about being inducted into the 2022 Columbus Blues Alliance Hall of Fame (October 2022). \nWhen not on the road\, Willie’s usually cutting sides at Eastman Studios. You can probably find Willie and his band performing into the wee hours of the morning somewhere in town or at Eldorado’s – their favorite underground juke joint in the Graceland district of Columbus. \nWillie once told a friend\, “Rock n’ roll has saved me from the blues of silence.” Long live rock n’ roll! \nGrab your blanket & lawn chair for music at the Goodale Park gazebo – see you there! \nBest of all\, this event is FREE! Bring your family\, friends\, and a picnic blanket (or chairs) for a relaxed summer experience you won’t forget. SUMMARY:The Spikedrivers - Goodale Park Music Series
DESCRIPTION:In 2003 a new sound sprang up in the Rust Belt; a raucous\, down-and-dirty sound\, an intoxicating and gritty sound that pulled people in droves to dance floors across the Midwest. That new sound was the bluesy\, upbeat\, country-fried rock ‘n’ roll of The Spikdrivers. Front man Jesse Henry’s unique and down-home song writing meets the electrified ruckus and wild precision of the backing band simiilar to what might have been if Louis Prima had led The Band. \nThe band has four studio albums and three live records that brought their songs into the hearts and ears of listeners across the United States. The Spikedrivers can grab hold of an audience and turn them instantly to avid fans. \nBest of all\, this event is FREE! Bring your family\, friends\, and a picnic blanket (or chairs) for a relaxed summer experience you won’t forget. SUMMARY:SNCA May Meeting
DESCRIPTION:WHO: Short North Civic Association\nWHAT: Monthly Meeting\nWHERE: Thompson Community Center – 1189 Dennison Ave\, Columbus\, OH 43201\nWHEN: Thursday\, May 1 – 2025 @ 6:00pm \nDOWNLOAD AGENDA » \n\nSpecial Guest Councilmember Lourdes Barroso de Padilla! \n\n\nThe Short North Civic Association\, in cooperation with the Harrison West Society\, Italian Village Society\, Dennison Place Residents Association and University Area Commission\, has for years lobbied City officials for safer streets in the Short North\, and in particular\, for 25 mph speed limits on W. 3rd\, W. 5th\, King and Neil Avenues\, as well as Summit and N. 4th Streets. \n\n\nCouncilmember Lourdes Barroso de Padilla chairs City Council’s Public Service Committee and is the legislative point person for the City’s Vision Zero initiative. She will be addressing a meeting of the Short North Civic Association May 1st\, 6pm at Thompson Community Center. \n\n\nThis is a Q and A regarding vehicle speeds and their effects with Councilmember Lourdes Barroso de Padilla. Slower speeds unlock a number of benefits\, the most obvious of which is crash safety\, but which also include inviting increased use of streets by alternative transportation means (including last-mile options)\, more pleasant conditions for pedestrians\, and increased enjoyment of our homes\, porches and yards\, due to reduced noise. \n\nIf you care about slower traffic speeds in the Short North\, please show your support for our efforts by attending the meeting May 1\, to help our City representatives understand how high traffic speeds not only pose a safety risk\, but detract from the quality of life in the neighborhood and make it more difficult for alternative transit to use our streets.\n  \n
