New build 3 story town house built on a very small city lot for a young urban couple and their dogs.

In the summer of 2015, Jordan & Megan listed their previous home in the Columbus suburbs, with the goal of moving to the Short North area, as it offered a more pedestrian-friendly lifestyle closer to the restaurants, shopping and nightlife in the area. With a lack of single family homes on the market, they expanded their search to duplexes, originally intending to purchase a fixer-upper where they could live in one side and rent out the other. In September 2015, they purchased a Victorian Village duplex (929-931 Hunter Avenue) that was conveyed with an adjoining vacant residential lot where the home currently stands, 933 Hunter Avenue. In October 2015, the couple began working with urbanorder architecture to explore potential new build options for the 933 Hunter lot. They wanted the new build’s exterior to blend in with the established look of the neighborhood while having an interior with modern amenities. One month later, they had preliminary drawings and in August 2016 broke ground on construction, with Derrick Layer Custom Homes and Remodeling as the builder. Seven months later, the home was finished.

The 1,693-sq. ft. build is complete with two bedrooms and two bathrooms and has an attached two-car garage. The ground floor has a mudroom/office combination with built-in cabinetry. The second floor features an open concept living room/dining room/kitchen combination, guest bedroom and bathroom. Off the dining room, you will find a 2nd floor deck which provides additional entertainment space. The 3rd floor serves as a spacious master suite with an attached bath and walk-in closet. The couple worked with John Wilson of CRI Interiors, Inc. on the interior design, to create a sense of peaceful elegance throughout the home. They opted for comforting coloring with accents of subtle wood tones as well as soft metal additions. The overall style is a blend of modern and east coast traditional.

During the seven-month project, Jordan and Megan lived in 1/2 of the duplex with their two dogs (Gimli a French bulldog and Cosmo, a lab). They say it was an incredible experience to watch the daily construction progress. They were constantly walking through the home during construction and very much enjoyed learning more about the process of building a home. Both sides of the duplex next door are now a vacation rental, which Megan runs.
