The 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom home is a converted warehouse originally built in 1962 by a roofing company. Take a look in the back and you’ll see a long building that was a 3-sided structure with a roof and dirt floor for storage of materials. The original warehouse space was 2000 sq. ft. and in 2017, the couple built a 2-story addition that connects the two buildings, bringing the total to 3750 sq. ft.

The design centers around the two large glass overhead doors and outdoor space. The idea was to take advantage of these large openings to create a natural flow that joins the indoors with the outdoors. The ceilings are original and 14 feet high. The main area is a single open space.

This unique warehouse conversion has views of the Columbus skyline from the second floor, a main floor designed for casual entertaining, chef’s kitchen with two large center islands and two overhead garage doors that open to outdoor kitchen and living areas.

They also built a small addition that serves as a foyer and front door. Steve Hurtt at Urban Order assisted with the renovations, as did Ryan Konst, a friend who acted as structural engineer. Jason Slagle is a contractor by trade, and his team did most of the work, which took two years to compete.

The owners did not hire official designers, but they received great help and guidance from friends Michelle Mixter and John Wilson. The couple also thanks their neighbors the Tabors, who are also on the tour around the corner on East 3rd Street – and were a few steps ahead of the McSlagles in their home construction. The Tabors assisted by sharing ideas and giving good advice on avoiding potential problems.

Jennifer is a chef, and Jason wanted to build her a dream kitchen. The kitchen is 400 sq. ft. with an additional 100 sq. ft. pantry. Jason’s dream space is his 850 sq. ft. workshop.

The space gives the couple the chance to do the things they enjoy like gardening, cooking and entertaining.
