The owners moved to Columbus from New York City in 2011 and settled in a loft apartment in Italian Village. They began to look for lots in and around the Short North, and met Bob and Michael Mahaney of M&M Developing. More than a year later, in the summer of 2013, they reconnected with Bob when he acquired the property where the house now sits. Upon hearing of the location, they acted immediately and proceeded to work hand-in-hand with the builder and architect over the following 18 months to design and build a home that’s comfortable and welcoming to guests.
The 3200 sq. ft. home, completed in January 2015, contains four bedrooms, three-and-a-half bathrooms, a laundry room, a formal dining area, family room, kitchen, large pantry, mud room, media room, billiard room and a bar area. Solid black walnut floors are featured throughout much of the house.
The couple relished the opportunity to create the interior of their dreams. They wanted an open concept on the first floor, as they love to entertain and wanted to utilize the entire area for their parties.
The dining room at the front of the house can easily seat 10 guests. They added a large bay window in the room that gives extra light and living space.
The kitchen is the entertaining hub, with its large center island finished with honed quartzite top and modern pendent light fixtures. They love to cook, so they made the pantry space a priority and designed an areanext to the kitchen and running the length of the back of the house for walk-in pantry space with deep, open shelving.
Their overall design aesthetic leans toward eclectic with a very modern slant, as they painted most of the walls on the main floor a darker grey that is complimented by white trim and wood work, with many art pieces from local artists. The ambience of the home is enhanced with 9 ft. ceilings.
Heading to the second floor, you will find three bedrooms, one of which serves as a home office. The main guest bedroom takes advantage of the bay window, and the guest bath with custom tile work has a floating vanity.
The master bedroom is finished with dark gray walls. When you enter the bathroom, you will notice a walk-in steam shower tiled from floor to ceiling in marble. The room also contains a large freestanding tub and dual vanities. The master suite also includes a large walk-in closet.
Gary, an avid college football fan and Auburn graduate, decorated the basement in honor of his alma mater, a decision that could be considered blasphemous to many Buckeye fans.
The basement includes a media space adorned with three large mounted TV’s. The basement floors are polished concrete with area rug. The large pool table adjacent to the media area leads to a fourth bedroom and guest bath around the corner.
The couple loves to entertain, whether it be a quiet dinner with friends or Saturday afternoon tailgate party with a large group, and the house serves all their needs.
The couple shares their home with their 8-year-old French Bulldog, Louis, and they have another Frenchie pup set to arrive at the end of September.
